"ContextPortal for Outlook solved two of my most painful problems, e-mail overload and quickly finding all of the inter-related information that is relevant to the people, projects and relationships that I need to manage. For me, the power of this solution was that it immediately presented related information in the form of powerful, contextual maps, organized the way I want to work."

Mountain Knowledge Partnership Project

Solutions Highlights:

  • Eight countries
  • 300 partners
  • Approximately 2 terabytes of information
  • 1 solution: ContextPortal™ for Windows from MODEL Technologies Inc.

Project Challenges and Objectives:

The Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) project includes a wealth of information available on a vast range of subjects including farming, natural resources, weather, water, good practices, biodiversity, cultural approaches, economics, and names of people with skills. This breadth and depth of information has the potential to provide key input needed for development initiatives.

This information and knowledge is contained in equally diverse locations: libraries, monastery records, oral testimonies, publications, films, training manuals, project reports, government department and local authority records, NGO observations, research theses, and many more.

The items in this large information collection are available in a wide variety of media and forms, from books and brochures, databases, recordings, and handwritten files, to maps, songs, CDs, films, photos, and satellite images.

At the same time, there is a huge need for the right information to solve urgent practical problems -- from a farmer trying to understand what is needed for a new crop he is growing for market, through development workers who want to evaluate the results of similar initiatives in other geographical areas and donor agencies who want to be sure that a new proposal is not just a duplication of previous effort, to policy makers trying to establish a new policy for efficient resource management.

There is a need for a comprehensive, coordinated system to document and disseminate the wealth of information in the HKH region, or indeed in other mountain areas.

Solution:

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) piloted the use of ContextPortal™ for Windows to provide a platform for a common solution framework to organize data, information, and knowledge, and to structure results and resources across interdisciplinary domains for improved retrieval of information about the existence and location of relevant knowledge objects.

ContextPortal for Windows has proved to be an effective portal for addressing the challenges ICIMOD faces.
